Using VideoAnt and YiNote
Do you use video (Youtube, Vimeo, Khan Academy etc) with your learners? If so you’ll be interested in how these two handy tools, VideoAnt and YiNote provide a way to captures notes synched to the video.
The tools allow you to select a video and, as you watch the video, type notes or bookmarks time-stamped to specific points in the video.
When the videos have finished the notes can be exported.
VideoAnt
VideoAnt is a tool created by the University of Minnesota (https://ant.umn.edu/).
You need to sign in via your Google or Facebook account and ‘Load a New Ant’ by adding the URL of a video file.
Once the video is loaded, you can start adding your notes.
Once you have completed making your notes, it can be embedded, exported, or shared either via a URL or by email.

YiNote (Previously Turbonote)
You will need to add YiNote as a Chrome browser extension. Once this is installed, it is a straightforward process of opening a YouTube video and then the YiNote extension. The notes page will open. Start and stop your video when you need to make notes, remembering to save. Each time you save, a bookmark with your notes will be shown along with the timings.
A copy of your notes can be saved as PDFs well as being exported to Evernote, Google Docs, or One Note.
Teaching and Learning
The tools provide so many possibilities for teaching and learning. For some learners, it becomes a study aid. For teachers, it could support flipped learning.
It also opens up new ways to deliver activities:
- watch the video and write down the key points
- watch your filmed presentation and make notes on areas you think you could improve further
- watch this job interview bookmark all the things you think the candidate did well or could have done better
